About Sessey

Who We Are

Sessey (curren.tools) is a free, English-language online toolkit focused on currency conversion and foreign exchange reference. We are a small, independent team of two — a developer and a financial writer — based in Asia. We started this project in early 2025 after becoming frustrated with existing currency tools: cluttered with ads, slow to load, requiring account sign-ups, or hiding behind paywalls.

Our goal was simple: build the currency tool we wished existed. Fast, clean, accurate, and genuinely free. No accounts, no tracking, no nonsense.

Daniel Chen

Co-founder & Research Analyst

Daniel handles the technical architecture and data infrastructure of Sessey. With a degree in Economics and 8+ years of experience tracking emerging market currencies, he ensures our rates are accurate and our educational content is grounded in real financial mechanics. When not coding or analyzing forex trends, he collects old banknotes from defunct currencies — a hobby that started during a trip to Zimbabwe in 2019.

Sarah Mitchell

Co-founder & Content Lead

Sarah writes all of Sessey's blog content and guides. She has lived and worked in 6 countries across 3 continents, giving her firsthand experience with the pain points of multi-currency living. Her background in behavioral economics helps her explain complex financial concepts in plain language. She tests every piece of advice against her own multi-currency banking setup before publishing.

Why We Built Sessey

Travel, remote work, and international business are more common than ever. Yet most currency conversion websites still look like they were designed in 2005. They are riddled with pop-ups, outdated rates, and confusing interfaces. We knew there had to be a better way.

We also noticed that most people don't understand which exchange rate they are getting. Banks, ATMs, and money transfer services all quote different rates, and the difference between the "mid-market" rate (the real rate) and the "retail" rate (what you actually pay) can cost you hundreds of dollars on a single transfer. We wanted to make that gap visible.

Our Mission

We believe currency tools should be:

What We Offer

Where Our Data Comes From

All exchange rates displayed on Sessey are mid-market reference rates sourced from the Frankfurter API, which is based on daily reference data published by the European Central Bank (ECB). The ECB collects rates from central banks across the Eurosystem and publishes them every working day at approximately 16:00 CET.

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the global "bid" (buy) and "ask" (sell) prices. It is the rate banks use when trading among themselves, and it represents the true underlying value of one currency relative to another at that moment.

Important: The rates you see on Sessey are not the rates you will get from your bank, ATM, or money transfer service. Those institutions add a markup (called a "spread") to cover their costs and make a profit. The spread can range from 0.5% on large transfers to 10% or more on small cash exchanges at airports. Always check with your provider for the actual rate you will receive.

How We Are Funded

Sessey is free to use. We do not charge for any features, and we do not sell user data. We are exploring partnerships with financial service providers (such as Wise, Revolut, and remittance services) to offer sponsored content and affiliate links, but these will always be clearly labeled, and we will never recommend a service we do not genuinely believe in.

We may also display advertising in the future. If we do, we will work only with reputable ad networks that respect user privacy and comply with GDPR and other relevant regulations.

Our Commitment to Privacy

We take privacy seriously. Sessey does not require account creation, and we do not collect personal data. Conversions run entirely in your browser; we do not send your input to any server. We use only essential cookies for site functionality (no tracking or advertising cookies unless we explicitly add them in the future, with your consent).

For full details, see our Privacy Policy.

Technical Details

Sessey is a static website built with vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We do not use heavy frameworks or libraries. This makes the site fast, lightweight, and accessible even on slow connections.

The currency converter fetches live rates from the Frankfurter API (a free, open-source wrapper around ECB data). All conversion calculations happen client-side in your browser. The site is hosted on a static hosting provider with global CDN coverage for fast load times worldwide.
